Magical Monday, A Big Birthday, and A Secret Running Must Have

Happy Monday!

It is a very special day today, because the best little 3 year old I know is celebrating his big day.  Happy Birthday Jack, I love you to the moon and back, and am so lucky to be one of your aunties. I can’t imagine life without you and you make everyday better! You absolutely love all things boy, rough housing, and digging in the dirt and sand. You make me smile and laugh, and the way to repeat our names to make a point absolutely melts my heart. You are one of the sweetest most generous little boys I know, and are a wonderful brother to your sister. You inspire me to live life without fear or reservations, the way you jump into the swimming pool without hesitation amazes me.  I know year 3 will be even better for you, a big boy bed, no more diapers, and school, you are going to do great things little man and I am so happy to get to be a part of them.

Happy Birthday Jack

I hope your week is off to a fantastic start. Mine started with my last speed training session at the lovely bright hour of 5 am followed by an hour of strength training. I am a morning person, but today just felt really early. the kind of early where you are half awake while driving, show up at the gym and sort of forget the whole drive there. That kind of early. I think that is one of the positives of working out in the morning. You work out before your brain knows you are awake.

I like to “trick” myself with work outs, so when I do speed work outs like today I watch the class happening in the gym and what they are doing always looks harder, I also like to know that with speed work it might feel really hard, but it is speed and will be done quickly which helps. Sometimes having to run 5 speedy miles in meter repeats is easier mentally for me then going out for a longer run. Today with the London Marathon only a week away was 6 X 400 meter repeats. It was quick, easy, and pretty effortless mentally. Work outs like this I know will only take minimal time, will be a confidence boost, and will also get my heart pumping quick.

If you have ever run an endurance event or done any hiking, skiing, or anything that can irritate the skin and body you know that chafing is one of the worst side effects. After i finish a long run, I get so excitied for a split second to take a nice warm, relaxing shower, and then bam, you get in the shower and want to cry. All of the strange/ weird/ places you didn’t think sensitive skin excitied you find out you have chaffed or burned there, your bum included. I know who doesn’t love to talk about uncomfortable places that chafe, right? ha My recommendation if you are a female runner is go buy these underwear now! Lululemon has some great stuff and often it is a little pricey, but these underwear for $16.00 are worth every penny. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Another recommended tip I have that I promise does not have to do with chafing is talking Calm before I go to be at night. You can buy Calm at your local whole foods or online here. Calm is magnesium and helps during stressful periods of life and exercises. I love this stuff and truly think it helps me sleep better and my muscles recover better? I sleep around 8 hours a night, and always feel like I could use more! How many hours do you aim to get a night?

Also if you are new to running or in a bored place with running, shape released this article on 7 ways to make running more fun: http://www.shape.com/fitness/cardio/7-ways-make-running-more-fun#040714 check it out! I personally love and follow rule number 5, smile! During races, or whenever I am feeling tired and fatigued I fake a smile, that eventually turns into a real smile, and makes me happy, and at least guarantees a smiling race photo!

And in case you have not read the 75 thoughts ever runner has that is going around the web  check it out: http://www.buzzfeed.com/erinchack/thoughts-every-jogger-has-while-out-for-a-running it is hysterical and I absolutely love these ones:

21. If I had a heart attack right now, I wonder who would find my body.
38. Hi hi hi please don’t hit me with your car.
50. And — hello — what do we have here? Your human is pretty cute too.
70. OK, almost home. Should I shower first and order pizza or order pizza and shower before it shows up?
